Being a geek is no bad thing. For the most part, geeks are a shy yet friendly and gentle folk,
too busy trying to optimize their computers and fantacizing about being a Jedi to bother anyone or pick fights.
But how do you know if you are one or not?
The following should help you find out!
You know you're geek if.....
...you've ever accessed your email account from a toilet cubicle.
...you've ever said "Klaatu barada nikto" out loud.
...you've ever flashed a ROM (note to non-geek readers: flashing a ROM may sound dodgy but actually does not involve any inappropriate exposure!)
...you're over 12 and own a lightsaber. And when you're alone, you sometimes swing it around and make all the noises.
...hearing the phrase "Sinclair ZX-81" brings you a rush of nostalgia.
...you have more email addresses that you've had girlfriends / boyfriends.
... you get withdrawal symptoms if you ever have to go more than a couple of hours without Internet access.
... the most expensive thing you own has Linux running on it.
... you know that "dual-booting" doesn't mean "kicking something twice".
...you use keyboard shortcuts more than you use your mouse.
...you're multilingual, but only if you count BASIC and C++.
...you cringe at the ridiculously innaccurate portrayal of computers / hacking in almost every Hollywood movie that has shown either / both.
... you care more about the speed of your computer than the speed of your car.
... you consider yourself to be at least fairly 1337, and know what that means.
... the first thing that comes into your head when you hear the word "Ubuntu" isn't a town you think might be in Africa somewhere.
... you know more about the origins of the universe than you do about football.
How did you do? :)

Top-level comments on this article: (8 total)Great, fun quiz, Ben! I am not a geek...but am married to a man who is 100% geek. Over the years, I think I have become somewhat 'geeky' through osmosis if that is possible! Thanks to a fun start to my day!
A fun read, Ben. I wouldn't say I'm a faux-Geek but quasi-Geek. Access email from toilet cubicle, more email accounts than BF's (don't have a BF and too ashamed to say how many email accts), withdrawal symptoms and keyboard shortcuts. Those make me the quasi-Geek I am. Thanks for the chuckles. Here's to geekiness! Cheers!
Hi Ben, thanks for the fun read :-) I was labeled a drama geek in high school, so I am happy to say that I am not a computer geek too :-) I fully enjoyed this little diddy. Blessings! Teresa
My son was considered a computer geek he now runs his own IT company how does that go he who laughs last laughs loudest or something like that
Great article. Well done.I have been a geek for a long time. I am not an internet or computers geek but I love maths, science, sci-fi, read hundreds of books and generally fit into the geek persona. For example I drink tea from a pi cup and my office is decorated with posters like the periodic table, Dr Who and a calculus poster.Anyway on the original geek test I scored 66% which makes me a geek god!
Great Ben! I'm 16 for 16 if you figure that parts of my house run on Linux.
2 out of 16.But I am still a video game geek. :)On the geek test, I scored 40 something% I think...
Do you have to be able to say "yes" to the whole list to be a geek or are you still guilty if you might have blushed at just one of them? Fingers crossed! lol JulianIf it was just one then you're probably only borderline-geek and might well be able to pass off as a non-geek with a bit of luck :)
